Maseru, Lesotho – On Mental Health Day, the U.S. Embassy Maseru is proud to highlight the remarkable work of Fulbright alumna Makamohelo Malimabe, a counselling psychologist at Leseli Mental & Behavioural Health Pty (Ltd).
Malimabe’s dedication to addressing mental health challenges in Lesotho began during her work as a professional counsellor in various NGOs. Recognizing critical gaps in mental health services, she pursued an MA in Counselling Psychology from Western Michigan University through The Fulbright Program.
Upon returning to Lesotho, Malimabe dedicated herself to enhancing mental health awareness and services. As a lecturer at the National University of Lesotho, she engages in pioneering research on topics such as climate change, gender, and mental health.
Through her leadership, Malimabe co-founded the “Mental Health for Public Health Lesotho” initiative, securing funding from the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) to provide training and raise mental health awareness across Lesotho.
Supported by the U.S. Embassy Maseru, this project aims to bridge gaps by engaging a diverse group of mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and traditional healers. Trainings held in multiple districts have already received overwhelming support.
