Windhoek, Namibia – Namibian President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba has called for stronger multilateral cooperation and comprehensive reforms of the United Nations to address global challenges, as the world prepares for the upcoming Summit of the Future in New York.
In his address, Mbumba warned that the world is facing a critical period marked by crises like climate change, global inequality, and geopolitical tensions. He urged global leaders to act collectively and provide the UN with the political backing and resources necessary to meet its objectives. He stressed that the future of the UN depends on its ability to adapt and become a more inclusive and effective platform.
Mbumba also called on member states to uphold core values such as peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development in their future actions, noting that multilateralism is essential, especially for smaller and developing nations like Namibia.
“No single nation, no matter how powerful, can solve the complex, cross-border issues we face today,” Mbumba said, pointing to global problems such as pandemics, cybersecurity, migration, and the digital economy as requiring international cooperation.
As negotiations continue in New York over the Pact for the Future, Mbumba urged countries to reflect on how to strengthen multilateralism and enhance representation in the global system. He emphasized the need for reforms to the UN Security Council to make it more responsive to contemporary challenges and called for improvements in the organization’s ability to handle humanitarian, environmental, and security crises.
Mbumba also acknowledged the importance of digitalization for development and expressed support for the Global Digital Compact, which aims to use new technologies to improve transparency, crisis response, and engagement with global citizens.
