President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead South Africa’s delegation to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79), which is set to take place from September 24 to 30, 2024, at the UN headquarters in New York. The President will be joined by key ministers, advisors, and senior officials for the high-level event.
The session will be chaired by Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister of Cameroon, who was elected President of the 79th Session. Yang has chosen the theme “Unity in Diversity for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity” for this year’s General Debate.
Before the debate, world leaders will convene for the UN Secretary-General’s Summit of the Future on September 22-23, aimed at advancing global development goals and fostering international cooperation. President Ramaphosa is expected to deliver his address during the summit on September 22. Leaders are anticipated to adopt the Pact for the Future, a document focused on accelerating global commitments.
On September 24, Ramaphosa will deliver his address at the General Debate, where South Africa is expected to focus on the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation to address global challenges.
In addition to participating in the General Debate, Ramaphosa will engage in various high-level events, including discussions related to the G20. He will also meet with the UN Secretary-General and other world leaders for bilateral talks.
