London, UK – Four individuals have been sentenced to prison terms totaling 17 years for their involvement in a sophisticated scheme to forge over 2,000 marriage certificates to facilitate illegal immigration into the United Kingdom. The perpetrators, all Nigerian nationals, were part of an organized criminal group that operated between 2019 and 2023.
The Home Office, in a joint investigation with Nigerian authorities, uncovered the fraudulent operation, which involved providing false marriage documents to Nigerian citizens seeking to remain in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme. The group’s primary motive was financial gain, as they charged significant sums to assist individuals in circumventing immigration laws.
Abraham Alade Olarotimi Onifade, Abayomi Aderinsoye Shodipo, Nosimot Mojisola Gbadamosi, and Adekunle Kabir were all convicted and sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court. The sentences ranged from nine months to six years, reflecting the severity of their crimes.
Home Office Chief Immigration Officer Paul Moran condemned the group’s actions, stating, “This group was incredibly prolific in their efforts to exploit our immigration system. Their sole priority was financial gain, and they preyed on the desperation of vulnerable individuals. We are pleased that our investigation led to their arrest and conviction.”
