Catania, Italy – The sinking of the award-winning superyacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily continues to draw attention. The vessel, known for its second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, capsized early Monday morning during bad weather.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was among those who perished in the tragedy. Divers recovered his body, along with those of Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and lawyer Chris Morvillo with his wife Neda.

The yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was the first confirmed casualty. Thankfully, Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued alongside 14 others. Notably, Charlotte Golunski, a mother, recounted her heroic efforts to save her one-year-old baby from drowning.
So, what do we know about the ill-fated vessel? Launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, the 56-meter Bayesian (formerly named Salute) underwent a refit in 2020. Its 72-meter mast, once the world’s tallest aluminum mast, earned it recognition.
The yacht boasted a luxurious interior designed by Remi Tessier, featuring a Japanese-inspired theme with light and dark beige tones, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck. Its accolades included “best exterior styling” at The World Superyacht Awards 2009 and “best interior” at the International Superyacht Society Awards 2008.

Accommodation on the Bayesian included six guest bedrooms – a master suite, three doubles, and two twins – capable of hosting 12 guests. Additionally, it could accommodate a crew of 10. Notably, pictures show air conditioning units in several bedrooms, potentially contradicting claims about open windows causing rapid water ingress and contributing to the capsizing.
While the cause of the sinking remains under investigation, ownership details have emerged. Shipspotting.com reports ownership by Revtom Limited, a firm with Ms. Bacares, Mr. Lynch’s wife, listed as the sole shareholder. The yacht’s name held significance for Mr. Lynch, with a connection to his doctoral thesis and the software that propelled his success. The name “Bayesian” refers to a statistical method used to enhance prediction accuracy.
Prior to the tragedy, the luxurious yacht could be chartered for up to €195,000 per week according to online listings.
