Lilongwe, Malawi – The Malawian government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, citing potential economic and environmental benefits.
Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola made the announcement during the launch of the first electric vehicle in Malawi by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Matola emphasized the government’s desire to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and save foreign exchange by importing fewer vehicles.
“The transition to electric vehicles will not only help us save money but also protect our environment,” Matola said. “By reducing carbon emissions, we can mitigate the effects of climate change.”
To make electric vehicles more accessible to the public, the government is working closely with the Ministry of Finance to implement policies that will lower the cost of purchasing and operating these vehicles. Matola also called on the private sector and other stakeholders to join the government in promoting electric vehicle adoption.
Fenella Frost, UNDP Malawi Resident Representative, echoed the government’s commitment to a green economy. “UNDP is fully supportive of the government’s efforts to promote electric vehicles,” she said. “We believe that this is a crucial step towards a more sustainable future.”
