Harare, Zimbabwe โ Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states have been urged to expedite the implementation of regional projects and programs. The call was made by the blocโs Chairperson, Dr. Frederick Shava, at the closing of the SADC Council of Ministers meeting in Harare on Tuesday.
Shava expressed satisfaction with the deliberations but highlighted the need for faster action on key issues such as infrastructure development, industrialization, and regional integration. He noted that the implementation scorecard, particularly in these areas, was โnot good.โ
The ministers discussed a wide range of issues, including the blocโs financial situation, the impact of climate change, food security, and gender equality. They also reviewed progress on the SADC Industrialization Strategy and Roadmap, with a focus on unlocking opportunities for economic growth.
To improve the regionโs economic fortunes, Shava emphasized the need for value addition to raw materials, job creation, and the harnessing of information and communication technologies. He also called for increased investment in peace and security to create a conducive environment for development.
In terms of governance, the ministers acknowledged the slow pace of ratifying SADC legal instruments and resolved to address the challenges hindering progress.
Shava concluded by assuring member states of his commitment to advancing the SADC agenda and called for continued unity and cooperation in building a peaceful and prosperous region.
