Geneva – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has vehemently condemned the storming of his office in Sana’a by the Houthi movement, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all detained UN staff in Yemen.
Türk described the forced entry into the UN office and seizure of property as a flagrant violation of international law and a serious impediment to the UN’s ability to protect human rights in the war-torn country. He has called for the immediate withdrawal of Houthi forces and the return of all stolen assets.
The UN office in Sana’a has faced escalating tensions with the Houthis. In June, 13 UN staff, including six human rights workers, were detained alongside over 50 NGO employees. Two other UN human rights staff had been held captive since November 2021 and August 2023.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the UN temporarily suspended its operations in Sana’a and other Houthi-controlled areas. However, the office continues to function in other parts of Yemen.
The latest incident, involving the seizure of office property and continued occupation of the premises, has further exacerbated the crisis. Türk has reiterated the UN’s demand for the safe return of all detained staff and unimpeded access to carry out its humanitarian and human rights mandate.
