Paris, France – The President of the São Tomé and Príncipe Football Association (FSF), Domingos Monteiro, has appealed to FIFA President Gianni Infantino for support in developing the country’s football infrastructure.
During a meeting at FIFA headquarters in Paris, Monteiro emphasized the urgent need for an upgraded national stadium and grassroots football facilities. The island nation has been unable to host FIFA World Cup qualifiers due to a lack of a suitable stadium and has had to play its matches in Morocco.
“We need to build infrastructure so we can nurture young talent and create a national team that can compete at the highest level,” Monteiro said. “A renovated national stadium and additional pitches are essential for the growth of football in São Tomé and Príncipe.”
Infantino expressed understanding of the challenges faced by the small African nation and pledged FIFA’s support. He recalled his visit to the country in 2018 and acknowledged the population’s passion for the sport.
“We will work closely with the FSF to leverage FIFA Forward and other programs to develop football infrastructure and talent in São Tomé and Príncipe,” Infantino said.
The FSF president expressed gratitude for FIFA’s support, highlighting the organization as the sole financial backer for the country’s football development. Monteiro also noted the significant progress made by the national team in recent years, with increased participation in international competitions.
