Johannesburg – Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) for backing a rival party in the May general election. The decision was announced by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula on Monday.

Zuma, who was suspended from the ANC earlier this year, openly supported the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party. MK performed unexpectedly well in the election, contributing to the ANC’s loss of its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid.

Zuma has a history of conflict with the current ANC leadership, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He faced numerous corruption allegations during his presidency and was forced to resign as party leader in 2018.

MK has condemned Zuma’s expulsion, vowing to challenge the decision in court. Zuma has 21 days to appeal the ANC’s ruling.

“Former President Jacob Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to dislodge the ANC from power, while claiming that he had not severed his membership. This conduct is irreconcilable with the spirit of organisational discipline and letter of the ANC… pic.twitter.com/3d999rpoFg
