Abuja, Nigeria – The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Tinubu on Monday signed the minimum wage bill into law, concluding months of negotiations among government authorities, labour unions, and the private sector. Tinubu signed the bill into law during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa on Monday in Abuja.

This is coming just days after the National Assembly passed the Minimum Wage Act, 2019, which raises the National Minimum Wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. A National Assembly delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and several members of the House of Representatives, were present to witness this landmark event. Following the signing, Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, stated that this move fulfills a promise made.

Lado in a statement said “the signing of the minimum wage bill into law by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is both a promise kept and a demonstration of his people-centric governance model. “Tinubu promised to pay a living wage to Nigerian workers during his electioneering campaigns and he has kept that promise.”
