Algiers – Algeria has strongly condemned France’s new stance on the disputed Western Sahara territory, accusing Paris of recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the region. The move marks a significant departure from France’s previous neutral position in the decades-old conflict.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry expressed deep disappointment over France’s decision, warning of potential repercussions. While Paris has yet to officially confirm the shift, Moroccan media outlets have already hailed the move as a victory.
The Western Sahara issue has been a major point of contention between Algeria and Morocco for over four decades. Algeria supports the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the territory, while Morocco claims sovereignty over the region. The United Nations has yet to recognize either claim.
Tensions between Algeria and Morocco escalated in 2021 following the US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. France’s new position is likely to further strain relations between the two North African neighbors.
The shift in French policy comes as Paris seeks to strengthen ties with Morocco. However, the move could jeopardize France’s relationship with Algeria, a key player in the region.
