Paris – The French government has declined to comment on Algeria’s strong condemnation of its recent recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The French Foreign Ministry has maintained silence in the face of Algeria’s accusations, citing potential impacts on the upcoming visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The visit, repeatedly postponed due to bilateral tensions, is scheduled for late September or early October.
Algeria has vehemently criticized France’s decision, accusing Paris of holding full responsibility for any consequences. The North African nation was reportedly informed of France’s new position in recent days.
The French government has previously expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara, a stance that has improved relations between the two countries. However, Algeria views the move as a recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory, a position it strongly opposes.
The ongoing dispute over Western Sahara continues to cast a shadow over relations between France and Algeria.
