South Africa’s soulful songstress Zoë Modiga is the spotlight for Spotify in June, gracing the platform’s Equal Africa program as its monthly ambassador. Known for her dynamic voice, innovative compositions, and deep connection to her heritage, Modiga brings a unique sound that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Modiga’s latest album, “Nomthandazo,” released in April, follows a string of critically acclaimed works like “Harmonic Soul,” “Yellow: The Novel,” and “Inganekwane.” She’s no stranger to recognition, having garnered multiple South African Music Award nominations and a loyal international fanbase.

Spotify’s Equal program empowers female artists like Modiga by providing them with a global platform. Through curated playlists, engaging content, and the dedicated Equal hub, Spotify shines a light on these talented voices. The program boasts over 6,900 female artists added to playlists and has supported more than 1,000 ambassadors in their home countries, including South Africa.

“Zoë’s intricate arrangements and soulful melodies are a testament to her dedication,” says Jodie Tabisher, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for South Africa. “We’re thrilled to showcase her as our Equal Ambassador this month.”

Modiga’s journey with music began in her childhood home of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Raised by her grandparents and surrounded by a vibrant community, she witnessed the unifying power of music firsthand.

“Music was the soundtrack to our lives,” she reflects. “I always wanted to impact people the same way those records did.”

Drawing inspiration from a vast array of African artists like Jabu Khanyile, Letta Mbulu, and Brenda Fassie, Modiga describes her sound as “soulful, spirited, cultured, inspired modern African music.” It’s a fusion that celebrates the human experience and delves into both personal and societal narratives.

“Actualizing your dreams requires embracing everything you are,” she declares. “Be defiant and unwavering. You are a gift to the universe – share your light with the world. The path may have challenges, but the rewards will be glorious.”
