MIDRAND, South Africa, May 30 – The Democratic Alliance (DA) of South Africa is determined to thwart any coalition efforts between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) or uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) parties. Helen Zille, the DA’s federal council chairperson and former party leader, conveyed this stance in an interview with Reuters on Thursday.
“We will do everything in our power to prevent an ANC, MK, and EFF coalition. That would spook investors, it would tank the economy, it would be a disaster for South Africa. So we are very committed to preventing that outcome,” Zille stated.
The ANC, which has held a parliamentary majority for 30 years, is projected to lose its dominant position based on partial election results. The DA is expected to come in second, followed by the EFF in third, and MK in fourth place.
Zille clarified the DA’s current stance on coalition negotiations: “We are not in negotiations with anybody.” When asked about potential coalition partners, she remarked, “My expectations are that my party will take the least bad option.”
