WARSAW, Poland – A Polish man, Mariusz Majewski, has been released from the Democratic Republic of Congo after a controversial life sentence for espionage, Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski announced on social media platform X.
The 52-year-old was detained in February and faced a military court, receiving the harsh sentence last week. Details surrounding his detainment and the location of his imprisonment remain unclear.
Polish authorities consistently maintained Majewski’s innocence. President Andrzej Duda directly appealed to his Congolese counterpart, Felix Tshisekedi, for Majewski’s release.
“He is not a spy,” declared Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski. Wronski elaborated that Majewski belonged to a travel club and was simply indulging in his passion. He attributed the situation to a series of unfortunate coincidences and Majewski’s lack of familiarity with local customs.
