President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has praised the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) for its crucial role in Malawi’s fight for independence. Speaking at the AMEC Centenary Celebrations held at Hannock Msokera Primary School Ground in Kasungu, Chakwera honored the contributions of Reverend Hanock Msokera Phiri and other figures who played pivotal roles in securing the nation’s freedom.
Chakwera emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the institutions and individuals who laid the foundations for Malawi’s independence. He also discussed ongoing initiatives to improve the livelihoods of Malawians and called for unified efforts to advance the nation’s development agenda.
Presiding Elder Rev. Manuel Chamamba expressed deep gratitude to President Chakwera for his support of the celebrations and praised his administration for its efforts to stabilize Malawi amid challenges such as COVID-19, Cyclone Freddy, and cholera. He highlighted the construction of security houses as part of the government’s developmental interventions and encouraged the church to continue supporting Chakwera’s administration.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Kawimbe, presiding Bishop of the 19th District of South Africa, also lauded President Chakwera for his dedication to religious affairs. The ceremony drew inspiration from the book of Lamentations, chapter 3, verses 21 to 24.
