Ibrahima Memounatou, a Togolese parliamentarian, was elected President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament on Thursday in Kano, Nigeria.

Memounatou, who recently secured re-election to her national assembly seat, ascends to the presidency following the regional body’s tradition of rotating leadership. She succeeds Sidie Mohammed Tunis of Sierra Leone.

Previously serving as Third Vice-President, Memounatou inherits a challenging mandate. She is expected to foster collaboration between the ECOWAS Parliament and other regional bodies to tackle pressing socio-political issues across member states.

“We face significant responsibilities,” Memounatou acknowledged. “We must be mindful of them and fulfill our commitments. Working together with intelligence, rigor, and determination is essential.”

During her term, Memounatou will be joined by two fellow Togolese parliamentarians, Senou Soklingbe and Patrick Kodjovi Senam Bolouvi, both members of the Union for the Republic (UNIR) party.

Established in 1993 and headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Parliament comprises 120 seats. Each of the 16 member states holds a minimum of five seats, with the remaining 40 allocated based on population.
