Sandton, South Africa – Three men, including two Nigerians and a South African national, were apprehended by the Hawks in Sandton this week on charges of human trafficking, rape, drug dealing, and violating immigration laws.
The arrest came after authorities received intelligence about a 34-year-old woman being held captive at a residence on Daisy Street. A joint operation involving the Hawks, the South African Police Service’s National Joint Operation and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints), and the Department of Home Affairs raided the house and found the victim along with three men.
“The victim reported horrific experiences, including sexual exploitation and forced drug use,” said Captain Lloyd Ramovha, Gauteng provincial spokesperson for the Hawks. A small quantity of narcotics was also discovered at the scene, believed to be in the possession of one of the suspects.
The victim is receiving support, and authorities believe there may be more victims who haven’t come forward. Warrant Officer Don Barath is leading the investigation and can be contacted confidentially at 082 319 9446.
The three men, Seeraj Wally (43), Ifeanyi Michael Ugbobuaku (39), and Matthew Adeogun (38), appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The prosecution will vehemently oppose their bail application due to the severity of the charges. The case has been postponed until May 31, 2024.
“Trafficking in persons is a global scourge, and the Hawks are committed to eradicating it,” said Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Gauteng head of the Hawks. “We will ensure those who exploit vulnerable members of society, especially women and children, face the full force of the law. South Africa remains a signatory to the United Nations’ Palermo Protocol, which combats this heinous crime.”
