Kigali, Rwanda – Rwandan President Paul Kagame delivered a powerful message at the opening ceremony of the Africa CEO Forum, urging African nations to embrace unity as the key to unlocking their vast economic potential.

“Africa does not have to ask for a seat at the table,” declared Kagame, highlighting the continent’s rich natural resources and youthful population. He emphasized that a united Africa could leverage its bargaining power on the global stage.

“The more united Africa is, the more productive our engagement with partners will become,” Kagame stated. “Integration allows our businesses to grow in larger markets and become more competitive.”

However, Kagame acknowledged the roadblocks hindering progress. He pointed to a lack of continental unity and the need to move beyond exporting raw materials.

“We need to upgrade our mindsets and aim for quality,” he urged. “Turning our resources into high-tech products will create a sustainable path to prosperity.”

The President emphasized the importance of good governance and fostering a collaborative environment.

“This will take time and effort,” he admitted, “but Africa can do it. Good governance and a willingness to find common ground are crucial. We can’t let bureaucracy slow us down.”

Kagame also hailed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a significant step towards shared prosperity. AfCFTA aims to unite African economies and facilitate trade among member states.

“We have the resources, but we need to share them,” stated Kagame. The World Bank estimates AfCFTA could lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty, but effective policy reforms are key.

The CEO Forum, taking place in Kigali for the second time since 2019, serves as a platform for over 2,000 business leaders and government officials to address Africa’s economic future. Heads of state from Mozambique, Kenya, Botswana, Djibouti, Sao Tome, and Cote d’Ivoire are expected to participate in the two-day event, co-hosted by the Rwanda Development Board and the International Finance Corporation.
