Kenya’s death toll from devastating floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains has climbed to 228, the interior ministry reported on Sunday. The situation is expected to worsen in May, with forecasts predicting continued downpours.
The ministry warned of further flooding in low-lying areas, near rivers, and within urban centers. Landslides and mudslides also pose a threat in areas with steep slopes, cliffs, and ravines.
The relentless deluges have caused widespread destruction, wiping out homes, roads, bridges, and other crucial infrastructure across Kenya, East Africa’s economic powerhouse.
At least 164 people have been injured by the extreme weather, and a staggering 212,630 have been displaced from their homes, according to the ministry.
