Veteran traveler Michael Palin embarks on another epic adventure, this time exploring the electrifying and diverse nation of Nigeria in his new series “Michael Palin in Nigeria” (Channel 5).

Despite his age (80!), Palin shows no signs of slowing down. After exploring North Korea and Iraq, he dives headfirst into the bustling chaos of Lagos, a city he describes as “like having 3,000 volts put through you.” Yet, amidst the cacophony, Palin finds himself fascinated by the city’s unique rhythm.

The series doesn’t shy away from Nigeria’s complex history. A visit to the “Point of No Return” beach in Badagry offers a somber reflection on the slave trade. Standing on the desolate shore, Palin acknowledges the dark chapter in British history.

Everywhere Palin goes, the overwhelming population growth of Nigeria is evident. From overcrowded classrooms to bustling markets, the sheer number of people paints a vivid picture of the challenges and potential this nation faces.

While the series acknowledges Nigeria’s political complexities, particularly through a conversation with Fela Kuti’s daughter Yeni, it avoids delving too deeply. However, Palin does manage to touch on the issue of violence near the Niger border during an interview with the Emir of Kano.

The series shines brightest when showcasing Nigeria’s vibrant spirit. A captivating display of tribal pageantry leaves Palin mesmerized, hinting at the rich cultural tapestry that lies beneath the surface.

“Michael in Nigeria” is a captivating travelogue that offers a glimpse into the heart of a pulsating nation. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there’s beauty, resilience, and a fascinating story waiting to be told.
