Tuesday morning witnessed a riveting turn of events as the inauguration of the 10th Senate unfolded, resulting in the election of former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, as the Senate President.
The 109 Senators had gathered to partake in the highly anticipated election for key positions within the upper legislative chambers of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Two prominent contenders emerged for the prestigious position of the Senate President. Senator Godswill Akpabio, an All Progressives Congress (APC) representative from Akwa Ibom North West, and Senator Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara North West, also an APC member, were in the running for the office of the third-highest-ranking official in the country.
Early reports suggested that Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South nominated Akpabio, while Senator Elisha Abbo from Adamawa North nominated Yari.
However, tension gripped the assembly hall when, after Senator Abbo nominated Yari, a wave of protests erupted among some lawmakers. Despite the uproar, Abbo staunchly defended his nomination, raising his voice in response to the opposition.
Challenging those who opposed Yari’s nomination, Abbo emphatically suggested that they seek legal recourse by going to court.
In the wake of this intense episode, Godswill Akpabio emerged as the victor in the keenly contested election, securing the position of Senate President, which holds significant influence and responsibility within Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
With the election now concluded, all eyes are on Senator Akpabio as he assumes this crucial role, bringing his experience as a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs to bear in guiding the Senate’s deliberations and shaping the nation’s legislative agenda.
