Micro-blogging platform Twitter has recently removed the verification tag from the account of former Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, while retaining the verification tag on former President Muhammadu Buhari’s account.

The verification tag, which was previously displayed on Osinbajo’s account, was specifically designated for government officials. However, it has now been taken down, raising questions about the reasons behind the removal.

Currently, Osinbajo’s Twitter account boasts a significant following of 4.2 million users. Throughout his time on the platform, he has shared a total of 3,946 tweets.

In contrast, former President Buhari’s account still holds the verification tag. With a follower count of 4.6 million, Buhari has shared 5,872 tweets to date.

The removal of the verification tag from Osinbajo’s account has sparked speculation and discussions among Twitter users. The move has led to inquiries regarding the criteria and guidelines employed by Twitter in determining who is eligible for the verification tag.

The verification feature on Twitter serves to authenticate the identity of prominent individuals and public figures, providing users with a reliable indicator that the account genuinely belongs to the verified person. It is typically employed for accounts of government officials, celebrities, and influential personalities.

As of now, Twitter has not provided an official statement regarding the specific reason behind the removal of the verification tag from Osinbajo’s account. It remains to be seen whether this action is part of a broader policy change or if there are specific circumstances surrounding this particular case.

The impact of this development on Osinbajo’s online presence and engagement with his followers is yet to be determined. Twitter users will be keenly observing any future updates or announcements from the platform to gain further insights into the matter.

In the realm of social media, verification tags carry significant weight, symbolizing credibility and authenticity. They play a crucial role in helping users identify legitimate accounts and distinguish them from impersonators or fake profiles.

Whether this incident will prompt discussions about the verification process on Twitter and its application to public figures within Nigeria’s political landscape remains to be seen. As the digital sphere continues to evolve, the topic of online verification and its implications for prominent individuals is likely to garner further attention and scrutiny.
