In a recent announcement, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, revealed that the incoming administration of Senator Bola Tinubu is set to commission the long-awaited Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Fashola made this statement during an extraordinary Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.
According to Fashola, the planned date for the commissioning of this crucial public asset is June 30. However, he highlighted a technical challenge in the last four-kilometer stretch to Lagos. The presence of black cutting soil beneath the pavement has caused a delay. Fashola assured that the issue will be addressed properly by removing and replacing the soil before the commissioning takes place. As a result, the completion date has been deferred to the next administration, coinciding with the 30th of June.
During the meeting, Fashola also invited President Buhari to virtually commission various projects undertaken by the Ministry of Works and Housing across the country. These projects include the Dr Goodluck Jonathan Federal Secretariat in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; the Ebele Okeke Federal Secretariat in Awka, Anambra State; and the Malam Yahaya Gusau Federal Secretariat in Gusau, Zamfara State.
Additionally, two significant bridge projects were mentioned. The Loko-Oweto Bridge, connecting Nasarawa and Benue States, and the Ikom Bridge in Cross River State were among the completed projects. Notably, the newly commissioned Second Niger Bridge, linking Anambra State and Delta, has been named after President Muhammadu Buhari, as announced by Minister Fashola.
The decision to name the bridge in honor of President Buhari was made following consultations with cabinet colleagues and governors from the South-East region. Fashola expressed the collective agreement that the Second Niger Bridge should bear a name, and it was concluded that it would be named the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge. The official opening of this iconic infrastructure will take place alongside the commissioning of other projects.
The upcoming commissioning of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the inauguration of several infrastructure projects demonstrate the commitment of the Nigerian government to improving transportation and connectivity across the country.
