The Nigerian government is set to launch a home delivery service for passports, according to Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior. Aregbesola made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) passport front desk office in Auchi, Edo State on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing passports to citizens in a timely manner, at an affordable cost, and with minimal hassle. He revealed that negotiations with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) are underway to utilize their speed mail service for passport delivery worldwide.
Aregbesola expressed concern over the activities of a few corrupt officials who manipulate the system, hoard applications, inflate prices, extort applicants, and conceal already-processed passports. He urged applicants to avoid engaging with third parties and instead apply directly through the NIS portal using any internet-enabled device.
“I appeal to applicants not to utilize the services of these individuals and other intermediaries loitering around passport offices, soliciting from applicants. The application process can be completed from the comfort of your own home using an Android phone via the Nigeria Immigration Service portal. You do not need a third party,” he emphasized.
The minister stressed that those who engage with these unauthorized individuals only perpetuate their illicit activities, hindering the government’s efforts to ensure transparency and provide seamless service to the public.
The introduction of the home delivery service for passports is expected to simplify the application process and enhance convenience for Nigerians. It is part of the government’s ongoing initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of passport services, ensuring that citizens can obtain this essential travel document without unnecessary delays or undue complications.
