The Nigerian House of Representatives has decided to summon the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, to investigate allegations of assault on a member, Kpam Sokpo, by soldiers from the 401 Special Forces Brigade in Gboko, Benue State, on March 18.
The lawmakers condemned the reported attack on guests at the Old Barn Hotel in Gboko, including Sokpo, by soldiers.
The motion was proposed by Mark Gbillah, another member of the House from Benue, who expressed concerns about the increasing incidence of military and police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and other forms of abuse by security personnel on unarmed civilians in Nigeria.
The House called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter, with the aim of identifying the soldiers responsible for the assault and holding them accountable for their actions.
