Frank Nweke (Jnr), the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu State, has expressed his belief that elections into public offices should be based on the character, competence, and capacity of individuals rather than their political parties.
Nweke made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday. He thanked the Obidients, who are followers of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for supporting his governorship ambition regardless of their political affiliation.
Nweke urged Nigerians to focus on the individual capacity of candidates running for elective offices. According to him, it is time for people to consider individuals who come to the party prepared through their careers, who have the education, the exposure, the capacity and the character.
Nweke believes he is the “most prepared and well-positioned” candidate in the March 18 governorship race in Enugu and expressed gratitude for the support of the Obidients.
Nweke rejected the idea of switching to the Labour Party, saying he is where he is supposed to be. He argued that elections should not be based on political parties because political parties have not served the country well. Nweke will be competing against LP’s Edeoga Chijioke, Mbah Ndubuisi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Uche Nnaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the race to succeed the incumbent governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, whose two terms of eight years end on May 29, 2023.
