The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is making a return for its ninth season and the organisers, MultiChoice Nigeria and Africa Magic, have promised to take it up a notch. The eighth edition of the awards, which was held over eight days in May 2022, was a spectacular event for those who attended or watched it on TV.
In a statement, the organisers have invited African filmmakers to submit their movies and films publicly exhibited or broadcast between December 1, 2021, and January 31, 2023, for this year’s edition of the awards. The entry portal will be open from February 20, 2023, until March 10, 2023. All films, made-for-television movies, or television series, whether aired in cinemas or otherwise, are eligible as long as they fall within the specified timeline.
To enter the awards, filmmakers must prepare a five-minute-long showreel, which should be less than 300MB and submitted on the Africa Magic website.
The Head of Content and West Africa Channels, MultiChoice, Busola Tejumola, said, “The AMVCAs returned last year after a one-year break with much pomp and circumstance. We had an eight-day celebration filled with several activities affecting the different facets of our industry. Since then, we have seen more brilliant work, and we look forward to celebrating them at the ninth edition of the awards. This year’s AMVCAs will once again demonstrate our intentionality in spotlighting the tremendous talent we have in the African film and TV industry.”
This year’s edition of the awards will feature categories such as the ‘Best Social Online Content Creator’, which was introduced last year and recognises the growing acceptance of content creators across Africa. There are also categories like the ‘trailblazer’ and ‘lifetime achievement’ awards, which are often emotional wins. The popular ‘Best-dressed’ for male and female categories is another highlight that many will be looking out for. Last year, Osas Ighodaro and Denola Grey took home the awards.
