The Council of Elders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a worldwide organization, announced plans to hold a peace summit to address the insecurity in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the South East region.
The council’s chairman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, stated that the council had also called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to participate in the summit.
The council expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the South East, where lives have been lost, properties and government institutions have been destroyed and financial resources have been spent on fighting a meaningless war instead of providing infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
The council also highlighted the issue of unemployment in the region and announced plans to tackle the problem by reactivating the moribund Niger Cement Company and reviving coal-mining activities in the region.
According to the communiqué, the meeting was attended by Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo, Chief Achike Udenwa, Prof. Tim Menakaya, Sen. Ben Obi, Cletus Ilomuanya, Amb. Kema Chikwe, Amb. Eddy Onuoha and Sen. Julius Ucha among others
