Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema joined his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and a host of dignitaries in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika. The historic occasion, held on April 26, 2024, marked the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania.
“We were delighted and honored to join the festivities,” President Hichilema stated, highlighting the longstanding bond between Zambia and Tanzania. The two nations, he noted, have shared a common path since their respective independences in 1964.

The celebration comes with a profound historical resonance. Zambia and Tanzania stood shoulder-to-shoulder during the fight against apartheid, offering a safe haven to refugees fleeing the oppressive regime. President Hichilema paid tribute to the legacy of the two countries’ founding fathers, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Dr. Julius Nyerere, whose vision laid the groundwork for this enduring partnership built on mutual respect and trust.
Extending heartfelt congratulations to President Hassan and the Tanzanian people, President Hichilema expressed his hope that future generations would continue to reap the benefits of this shared history. The warm sentiment concluded with “Asanteni sana” (Thank you very much in Swahili).
