On April 23, 2024, Elita Gavele, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Italian Republic, formally presented her letter of credence to Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Following the accreditation ceremony, Ambassador Gavele engaged in discussions with President Mattarella, focusing on enhancing the political and economic ties between their respective nations. Notably, a key point of discussion revolved around boosting tourism to Latvia, aimed at attracting Italian visitors to explore the Baltic nation’s offerings. The officials also underscored the importance of deepening collaboration between universities, particularly in facilitating youth and student exchange programs.
Acknowledging their shared values and partnership within the European Union and NATO, Latvia and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to mutual cooperation. Ambassador Gavele expressed gratitude for Italy’s involvement in NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup stationed in Latvia and its contributions to the Baltic Air Policing mission.
The discussion also touched upon the evolving situation in Ukraine, with both parties concurring on the necessity of extending support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s military aggression.
Elita Gavele assumes her diplomatic responsibilities in Italy, succeeding Ambassador Solvita Āboltiņa.
