Abuja, Nigeria – The Czech Republic embassy in Nigeria hosted a celebration yesterday to mark the 20th anniversary of the European Union’s enlargement. The event also acknowledged the Visegrad Group, a regional alliance within the EU that includes the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, all of which have embassies in Nigeria.
A highlight of the celebration was a joint concert featuring folk music from each Visegrad Group nation. The performance resonated with attendees, including a prominent figure in European integration, former Spanish Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos.
This year also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of renowned Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. The Abuja International Choir fittingly opened the concert with a selection from Smetana’s opera “The Bartered Bride.”
