A Nigerian delegation led by Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, recently visited the Netherlands on a working visit. The trip, facilitated by the Dutch Embassy in Nigeria and the Nigerian Embassy at The Hague, aimed to explore solutions for Lagos’ waste management challenges and promote a circular economy in the state.

The delegation included key figures from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and collaborating private sector partners. Notably, Harvest Waste, a Dutch company, expressed interest in investing in a waste-to-energy plant in Lagos. This project has the potential to significantly reduce waste, generate up to 50 megawatts of electricity, and create over 400 jobs.

Another Dutch company, Closing the Loop, also hosted the delegation for a dinner meeting. They explored the possibility of establishing an e-waste smelter in Lagos, further pushing the state towards a circular economy model.

The Netherlands has a strong commitment to supporting innovative solutions for global challenges. The Netherlands-Nigeria Circular Economy Strategy Week, scheduled for March 25th–28th, 2024, in Lagos, will provide a platform for further discussions and collaborations between Dutch and Nigerian companies interested in transitioning to a circular economy.
