THE HAGUE, Netherlands – The United Arab Emirates urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to uphold the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine during a recent hearing. Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, representing the UAE, condemned Israel’s ongoing violations in the occupied territories and called for an end to the 56-year occupation.
Nusseibeh emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the UN General Assembly’s request for the ICJ’s opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies. She described the “devastating war” in Gaza and escalating violations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where settlement construction and violence have reached alarming levels.
“Israel’s occupation is illegal and must end,” Nusseibeh declared, pointing to the decades of suffering endured by the Palestinian people. She expressed hope that the ICJ’s advisory opinion will provide crucial evidence to address violations and their legal ramifications.
The UAE reiterated its confidence in the ICJ’s ability to contribute meaningfully to a peaceful resolution based on international law. Ambassador Nusseibeh stressed the universal application of legal principles, underscoring their importance in resolving the longstanding Palestinian issue.
“International law cannot be an à la carte menu,” she declared. “It must apply equally to all.” She emphasized the fundamental principles at stake – self-determination, human rights, and the universal yearning for peace, justice, and freedom.
