Georgetown, Guyana – Guyana and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to a strong partnership during the 2024 Guyana-EU Partnership Dialogue. Both sides highlighted key areas for collaboration, including climate change, energy, security, trade, and human rights.
The meeting, led by Guyanese Foreign Minister Hugh Todd and EU Ambassador René van Nes, focused on open and constructive discussions on shared interests at bilateral, regional, and international levels.
Both sides acknowledged the transition from the Cotonou Agreement to the Samoa Agreement and discussed Guyana’s potential accession to the latter. Minister Todd emphasized the importance of the EU as a key development partner and reiterated Guyana’s commitment to collaboration in areas like climate change, energy, and security.
Ambassador van Nes commended Guyana’s political engagement and economic growth, stressing the EU’s commitment to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. He also announced a follow-up EU economic mission to Guyana later this year, aiming to encourage business interaction between both regions.
Recognizing the potential for further collaboration, both sides agreed to explore new areas under the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda, focusing on forest management, health, water management, and renewable energy.
