Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (Feb 8, 2024): Wrapping up his two-day visit to Mongolia, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the importance of engaging young people to strengthen bilateral relations.
“Winning over the younger generation is key to investing in German-Mongolian relations,” Steinmeier declared in Ulaanbaatar. He recognized the interest of young Mongolians in areas like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and tourism, highlighting the benefits of increased economic exchange.
This focus on youth aligns with the strategic partnership agreement signed the day before, elevating the countries’ 50-year diplomatic ties and paving the way for joint projects. The historical connection runs deep, with many Mongolians having studied or worked in former East Germany, and roughly 1% of the population speaking German.
At the Alexander von Humboldt School, Steinmeier and his wife witnessed the fluency of 16-year-old students who had recently visited Germany. Their stories, ranging from horseback riding prowess to discovering chocolate delights, underscored the impact of cultural exchange. Several expressed aspirations to study in Germany, highlighting the need for stronger connections.
Responding to a student’s concern about lacking resources, Steinmeier promised, “We will have to think about that.” This commitment signals Germany’s intent to invest in the future of Mongolian youth, fostering deeper ties between the two nations.
