Valletta, Malta – Ethiopia and Malta further solidified their growing relationship during a recent meeting between their respective representatives. H.E. Demitu Hambissa, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Italy, and H.E. Dr. Ian Borg, Malta’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, met in Valletta to discuss bilateral cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the significant progress made in the relationship, building upon previous discussions between the Prime Ministers of both countries and Minister Borg’s own visit to Ethiopia. These high-level engagements have laid the foundation for enhanced collaboration on various fronts.
Ambassador Demitu provided an overview of the current situation in Ethiopia, focusing on key issues like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiations, implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the Transitional Justice Mechanism, the National Dialogue process, and Ethiopia’s request for Red Sea access.
Minister Borg expressed his appreciation for the briefing and commended the existing relationship between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of fostering closer ties between the Ethiopian and Maltese business communities to unlock potential opportunities. He announced an upcoming Maltese trade mission to Ethiopia in March 2024, which will serve as a valuable platform for further collaboration.
