Herro Mustafa Garg was sworn in on Tuesday as the new US Ambassador to Cairo, the US State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs announced today.
Garg, a veteran diplomat with over three decades of experience, will lead the US Embassy in Cairo during a “significant moment” in the strategic bilateral relationship between Egypt and the United States. She will also work to advance joint efforts for stability, security, and prosperity in the region.
Garg previously served as the US ambassador to Bulgaria for more than three years until March 2023. She has also held a number of other senior positions in the State Department, including Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal; Political Minister Counselor at the US Embassy in New Delhi, India; Advisor on the Middle East in the Office of the Vice President; Deputy Director of the Afghanistan Office; Advisor on the Middle East in the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs; Director for Iran, Israeli-Palestinian Affairs, and Jordan at the National Security Council; and National Security Council Director for Iraq and Afghanistan. She was also the lead US Civilian Coordinator in Iraq’s Mosul and Consular Officer in Lebanon’s Beirut.
Garg hails from Kurdish descent and speaks several languages, including Arabic.
She was nominated to the post of US Ambassador to Cairo by US President Joe Biden in March 2023.
