The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, H.E. Matete ‘Nena, met with the UN Under-Secretary for the Department of Political and Peace-building Affairs (DPPA), Rosemary A. DiCarlo, on August 16, 2023.

The meeting focused on the UN’s efforts to consolidate peace and stability in Lesotho through electoral assistance and technical assistance provided for the National Reforms Process. The two also discussed the need to invest in preventive diplomacy, accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, and the state of peace and security in the world, marred by coups and ongoing conflicts.

The DPPA is a department of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for monitoring and assessing global political developments and advising the UN Secretary-General in the peaceful prevention and resolution of conflict. It also provides staff support to the UN Security Council and advises the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.

The United Nations has always come to Lesotho’s aid during trying times. The UN Agencies and Country Offices in Lesotho, particularly the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), have played a major role in helping resolve political conflicts in Lesotho. This has been done mainly through facilitating dialogue among political actors and other stakeholders, mobilizing resources, and providing technical assistance.

The meeting between Ambassador ‘Nena and Under-Secretary DiCarlo was productive and highlighted the strong partnership between Lesotho and the United Nations. The two agreed to continue working together to promote peace, security, and sustainable development in Lesotho and around the world.
