As part of the South African delegation attending the Russia-Africa Summit, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, has expressed her views on Africa’s relationship with Russia and the need for greater diversity within the structures of the United Nations (UN).
During an interview with Russian state television RT, Minister Pandor raised concerns about the UN’s role as a political tool and called for diversity in its structures and mechanisms to allow for democratic processes. She emphasized the importance of ending the UN’s use as a weapon against others and promoting fairness in world trade.

She stressed the need for financial systems and institutions to avoid being overly politicized and act as barriers to trade.
Regarding South Africa’s relationship with Russia, Pandor highlighted the historical significance of the bond between Africa and Russia, particularly in South Africa’s struggle for freedom. She underscored that the longstanding cooperative partnership between the two countries is of great importance.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is also attending the summit and is expected to hold discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on various issues, including the Ukraine war, trade, and the BRICS gathering.
Pandor’s statements reiterate South Africa’s commitment to maintaining friendly relations with Russia despite pressure from others who might oppose such connections. The minister firmly stated that Russia remains a friend, and the cooperative partnership between the two nations spans many years.
