Nigerian Consul General Condoles Omotoso Family in South Africa

Johannesburg, July 27, 2023 – The Nigerian Consul General to South Africa, His Excellency Ambassador Andrew Idi, led a solemn condolence visit yesterday to the family of the late Nigerian literary icon, Prof Bankole Omotoso, who passed away on July 19, 2023.

Accompanied by a minister from the Consulate, Ambassador Emmanuel Oguntoye, and other dignitaries, Ambassador Idi’s delegation was warmly received by Prof Omotoso’s eldest son, Akin Omotoso, and other family members. The visit aimed to express heartfelt support and encouragement, praising the late icon’s positive contributions to South Africa through his literary works.

In addition to the personal visit, Ambassador Idi also shared a heartfelt condolence message addressed to the family of Prof. Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso. The message conveyed profound sadness as the Consulate General of Nigeria and the entire Nigerian community in South Africa received the news of the passing of an illustrious and highly revered compatriot. Ambassador Idi hailed Prof. Omotoso as an accomplished literary icon and recognized his unwavering commitment to the betterment of society, promotion of social justice, and dedication to the service of humanity. The late professor’s significant contributions to cultural exchanges and cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa were also acknowledged, strengthening brotherly ties and fostering a harmonious relationship between the two countries.

“While we mourn with you, it is my firm belief that our final respects to Prof. Omotoso must include a celebration of his remarkable life,” Ambassador Idi expressed. He emphasized that Prof. Omotoso’s legacy and legendary contributions to Nigeria and humanity would forever be etched in history, inspiring generations to come.

During the visit, Dr Olusola Agbeniyi, President of AYIDSA (Association of Yorubas in Diaspora South Africa), and Prof Adewale Olutola, a distinguished member of AYIDSA Hall of Paladin, also paid tribute to the late literary maestro.

The Consul General and his delegation paid their respects by signing the condolence register, extending their sympathies to the grieving family.

The Consulate General’s condolence message stands as a testament to the profound impact Prof. Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso had on the Nigerian community in South Africa and beyond. As the literary world mourns the loss of a great scholar and advocate for social change, his legacy will continue to inspire and shape the lives of many. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
