South African Ambassador visits UNIFIL headquarters in Lebanon

Naqoura, Lebanon – H.E. Ambassador Barry Gilder, representing the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, conducted a significant field visit on June 13, 2023. The purpose of his visit was to tour the Headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) located in Naqoura, South Lebanon, and to gain insights into the mission’s operations and the Blue Line, which marks the border between Lebanon and Israel. Ambassador Gilder was warmly received by Mr. Hervé Lecoq, the Deputy Head of Mission at UNIFIL, who provided a comprehensive briefing on the crucial work carried out by the peacekeeping force in the region.

During the visit, Ambassador Gilder had the opportunity to witness firsthand the important role played by UNIFIL in maintaining peace and stability in southern Lebanon. As he explored the headquarters and the mission’s operational areas, Ambassador Gilder gained valuable insights into the various activities undertaken by UNIFIL to fulfill its mandate.

The South African diplomat engaged in discussions with Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Lecoq, who shared detailed information about UNIFIL’s operations, challenges, and accomplishments. The briefing highlighted the critical role of UNIFIL in maintaining a secure and stable environment, supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces, and promoting peace and stability between Lebanon and Israel.

The visit to the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, provided Ambassador Gilder with a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics in the region and the significance of UNIFIL’s presence. The Blue Line serves as a tangible symbol of the ongoing efforts to ensure peaceful coexistence and prevent any potential escalation of tensions.

Ambassador Gilder expressed his appreciation for the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the personnel of UNIFIL in carrying out their challenging tasks. He commended the peacekeepers for their commitment to upholding international peace and security and acknowledged their significant contributions towards fostering stability and dialogue in the region.
