Regional workshop strengthens SADC’s diaspora engagement and mapping capacities

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO), in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), successfully concluded a three-day Regional Capacity Building Workshop on Diaspora Engagement and Mapping Toolkit in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Held in Windhoek, Namibia, from May 30 to June 1, 2023, the workshop aimed to enhance the abilities of SADC Member States in effectively engaging with their diaspora communities.

Amb. Penda Naanda, the esteemed Executive Director in the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, delivered the Opening Remarks at the event. Her address emphasized the significance of diaspora engagement as a crucial aspect of regional development and cooperation, highlighting the potential for leveraging the talents, expertise, and resources of the diaspora for the socio-economic advancement of their respective countries.

During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to share best practices, knowledge, and experiences in diaspora engagement and mapping among SADC Member States. The focus was on exploring innovative strategies and tools to effectively engage with the diaspora and harness their potential for sustainable development. Additionally, mapping diaspora communities was prioritized to enhance understanding and strengthen connections between countries and their diaspora populations.

The workshop brought together representatives from various SADC Member States, fostering collaboration and networking among government officials, policymakers, and experts in the field. Interactive sessions facilitated fruitful discussions, idea exchange, and the formulation of effective strategies to leverage the skills, investments, and knowledge of the diaspora for the benefit of the region.

The Regional Capacity Building Workshop on Diaspora Engagement and Mapping Toolkit successfully achieved its objectives during its duration from May 30 to June 1, 2023. Participants gained valuable insights and developed practical approaches to enhance their engagement with diaspora communities, promoting regional integration and development.

This initiative reflects the commitment of SADC Member States to actively involve their diaspora populations and tap into their vast potential. By engaging effectively and mapping diaspora communities, the region is poised to leverage the diverse skills, expertise, and resources of its diaspora communities, fostering collaboration and driving progress across multiple sectors.
