CAIRO, May 29 – In a significant development, Egypt President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have reached an agreement to immediately commence the process of upgrading diplomatic relations and exchanging ambassadors, according to a statement released by Egypt’s presidency on Monday.

President Sisi initiated a phone call to President Erdogan to convey his congratulations on his recent presidential victory. During the call, the two leaders discussed the bilateral relationship between their countries and expressed their mutual desire to enhance cooperation and strengthen ties.

The efforts to improve relations between Egypt and Turkey have been ongoing. Egypt’s foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, visited Turkey in April and held discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu. At that meeting, both sides agreed on a specific timeline to elevate the level of diplomatic relations and prepare for a potential summit between Presidents Sisi and Erdogan.

Following Turkey’s election on May 14, Foreign Minister Cavusoglu indicated that the presidents may have the opportunity to meet in person once again. This indicates a growing momentum in the efforts to normalize relations and foster greater understanding between the two nations.

The agreement to upgrade diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors is a positive step forward in the bilateral relationship between Egypt and Turkey. It signifies a willingness from both sides to engage in constructive dialogue and seek avenues for cooperation on various fronts, including political, economic, and cultural exchanges.

As the preparations for exchanging ambassadors get underway, it is expected that this development will contribute to the restoration of full diplomatic ties between the two countries and facilitate closer collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

The path to improved relations between Egypt and Turkey reflects a shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation. The outcome of this diplomatic breakthrough will be closely watched as it holds the potential to positively impact the broader dynamics of the Middle East.
