China’s C919, the first domestically manufactured large passenger jet, successfully completes its inaugural commercial flight, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation industry. The flight, designated as MU9191, takes off from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and lands at Beijing Capital International Airport. More than 130 passengers eagerly board the C919 to experience its innovative features.
China Eastern Airlines (CEA) provides specially designed boarding passes to commemorate the aircraft’s first commercial flight. Passengers are treated to a unique in-flight entertainment experience with high-definition 1080p videos displayed on 20 ceiling-mounted monitors installed in CEA’s single-aisle fleet. The airline has also produced a captivating safety instruction video showcasing China’s scenic landscapes.

One of the highlights for passengers is the themed meal service, featuring dishes chosen through passenger voting. The selected theme, “wufu linmen,” symbolizes “five blessings come to the family” in Chinese culture. Economy class passengers can enjoy a delectable meal consisting of a clay pot of rice with preserved meat, a three-color fruit platter, mango pudding depicting the maiden flight, China Eastern Airlines’ chocolate shortcake, and White Rabbit milk candy.
Excitingly, commercial tickets for future C919 flights are now available for purchase. Passengers can book tickets for a C919 flight from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, with the first flight scheduled for May 29. Priced at 919 yuan (approximately $130) for an economy class seat, this marks the first commercial flight available for sale operated by the C919.

Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the C919 obtained its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in September of last year. China Eastern Airlines became the first commercial buyer of the C919, signing a contract for five aircraft in March 2021. The airline received its initial C919 jet, identified as B-919A, on December 9, 2022. The remaining four aircraft will be delivered over the next two years based on the production and delivery plan.
To ensure operational safety, China Eastern Airlines conducted a 100-hour verification flight for its first C919 aircraft starting from December 26, 2022. This comprehensive test aimed to confirm the aircraft’s reliability and adherence to safety standards.
The C919 has already garnered significant interest, with over 1,200 jetliners ordered to date, according to COMAC. This achievement underscores the aircraft’s potential to contribute to China’s aviation industry and its ambition to establish itself as a key player in the global aerospace sector.
