Accra, 16th May 2023 – A delegation of technical experts, led by Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), concluded a successful working visit to the Republic of Ghana. The visit, which took place from the 15th to the 16th of May, aimed to strengthen collaboration and explore avenues for combating terrorism in the region.
During their stay, the team embarked on a series of strategic meetings with key Ghanaian institutions. These included visits to the Ministry of National Security, the Executive Secretariat of the Accra Initiative, the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force in Tamale.
Of particular significance was the courtesy call paid to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, represented by her Special Advisor, Amb. Kwabena Osei-Danquah, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Monday, 15th May, 2023.
Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah commended the exceptional leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, for spearheading the Accra Initiative and for hosting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a demonstration of his pan-Africanist vision.

During the discussions, both sides explored various matters related to the collaboration between the ECOWAS Commission and the Accra Initiative in their joint efforts to eradicate terrorism within the region. Additionally, the parties deliberated on mechanisms for funding the Accra Initiative, recognizing the critical importance of adequate resources to achieve its objectives.
Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah reassured Ghana of the unwavering support of the ECOWAS Commission toward the Accra Initiative. He further revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be finalized to solidify and strengthen the relationship between ECOWAS and the Accra Initiative.
The visit of the ECOWAS Technical Team marks a significant step forward in the collective fight against terrorism in West Africa. The discussions held and the commitment shown by both Ghana and ECOWAS signify a shared determination to tackle this pressing regional challenge.
As the ECOWAS Commission continues to collaborate closely with the Accra Initiative, it is expected that the exchange of expertise, resources, and strategic planning will yield positive outcomes in the region’s fight against terrorism. The visit serves as a testament to the regional cooperation and the proactive measures being undertaken to safeguard peace and stability within West Africa.
