New York – Amb. Mathu Joyini, South Africa’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, participated in a significant event on May 15, 2023, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian NAKBA. The commemoration took place at the UN Headquarters in New York, where global dignitaries gathered to reflect on the Palestinian people’s ongoing struggle for freedom and their resolute opposition to Israel’s Apartheid-like policies.

The event saw the esteemed presence of President Mahmoud Abbas, who addressed the broader UN membership. President Abbas passionately conveyed the unwavering determination of the Palestinian people to continue their fight for freedom, justice, and self-determination. His speech shed light on the hardships endured by Palestinians throughout the NAKBA and underscored their resilience in the face of adversity.

Ambassador Mathu Joyini’s attendance at the commemoration highlights South Africa’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its commitment to advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people on the international stage. As a nation that has experienced the struggles of apartheid, South Africa empathizes with and stands in solidarity with the Palestinians as they confront similar challenges.

The NAKBA, meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, marks the displacement and dispossession of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. The anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people and their aspirations for statehood, self-determination, and the right to live in peace.

Mathu Joyini and other global leaders reaffirmed their support for a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The event provided a platform to shed light on the Palestinian struggle and garner international attention and solidarity for their cause.

As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, events such as these play a vital role in raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and encouraging efforts towards a peaceful and equitable solution. South Africa’s active involvement in the commemoration demonstrates its commitment to advocating for justice, human rights, and the realization of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

The anniversary of the Palestinian NAKBA serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by the Palestinian people and the need for continued international support in their pursuit of freedom, dignity, and a just resolution to their longstanding grievances.
