According to a human rights group, ethnic minority rebels, and media reports, at least eight civilians, including children, were killed in an airstrike on a village in northwest Myanmar. The incident occurred on Thursday, when four bombs were dropped on Khuafo, a village in Chin State, bordering India.
The Chin Human Rights Organisation (CHRO) and the Chin National Front claimed that two children, ages 3 and 9, were among the dead, and there were no resistance fighters based in the village. The CHRO shared pictures of damaged houses and coffins made from planks of wood, which could not be independently verified by Reuters.
The military, which has responded to attacks by ethnic minority armies and resistance fighters with air strikes and heavy weapons, has denied allegations of committing atrocities against civilians, claiming that it is fighting “terrorists” to restore democracy. The United Nations says that the violence has displaced at least 1.2 million people.
