The Kingdom of Lesotho has pledged its continued support for the African Union’s vision during a diplomatic visit to the African Union Commission (AUC) headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Ambassador Nts’iuoa Sekete, Lesotho’s Permanent Representative to the AUC and Head of Mission to Ethiopia, met with the newly elected Chairperson of the AUC, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, to deliver greetings and a message of congratulations from His Majesty King Letsie III.
The meeting took place following the February 2025 election of the AUC Chairperson and four commissioners by the Assembly of Heads of State. Elections for the remaining two commissioner roles are set for July during the Executive Council’s Mid-term Coordination Meeting.
During the courtesy call, Ambassador Sekete reiterated Lesotho’s commitment to the AU’s integration goals and development agenda. She noted the country’s strong interest in filling its employment quota at the Commission with skilled and experienced Basotho professionals.
Their conversation also explored Lesotho’s key development sectors, including the Highlands Water Project, the growing textile and apparel industry, and opportunities to boost intra-African trade. The ambassador referenced King Letsie III’s continental role as Champion for Nutrition and discussed the HMK-Just Energy Transition project as part of Lesotho’s climate and sustainability efforts.
Both parties also reviewed the ongoing institutional reforms within the AUC aimed at improving the body’s responsiveness and performance. Ambassador Sekete expressed Lesotho’s support for the reform agenda and shared the country’s hope for a more agile AU capable of tackling Africa’s most pressing issues.
